Updated - Kate Middleton will stay at San Anton Palace and visit Valletta, the Grand Harbour and Vittoriosa during her short visit to Malta next month to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Independence.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge will be in Malta representing the Queen. This will be her first official solo overseas trip.

The programme was revealed by the UK media late yesterday, while the Department of Information in Malta announced it this afternoon.

The Duchess arrives on Saturday, September 20 and stay here overnight as guest of President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca.  

She will call on the prime minister at the Auberge de Castille and view the In Guardia re-enactment at the Palace Square, Valletta.

At the National Library she will view a number of historical documents, including letters from kings Henry VIII and George II, and the original citation awarding the George Cross to Malta.

The evening will be rounded off with an official Independence Day reception at the Upper Barrakka.

On Sunday, September 21, Independence Day, the Duchess will attend Mass at St John's Co-Cathedral and later view the two Caravaggio masterpieces.

The events continue with a visit to Centru Access in Vittoriosa for a meeting with the staff and clients of Agenzija Zghazagh.   

There will be a walkabout in Vittoriosa and a tour of the Church of St Lawrence - across the road from the Freedom Monument - followed by a boat trip in Grand Harbour.

The last event will be a Garden Party hosted by the British High Commissioner.
