Nationalist MP Antoine Borg said today that it was unacceptable that cooks at the Institute for Tourism Studies had reportedly been told to prepare food for private receptions organised by the institute's executive director, and that the ingredients were paid for by the institute.

Mr Borg said this was the latest in a string of worrying cases of mismanagement at the ITS - the others including a lecturer in Gozo for only seven students and an employee who stayed out of work beyond her maternity leave.

Mr Borg said all limits had been exceeded, and the current situation was discouraging staff and students.

The ITS was vital for the tourism sector, and it should be focusing on strengthening its ties with the industry, Mr Borg said.

TOURISM MINISTRY REACTION

In a reaction, the Tourism Ministry said hard work was being put in for the ITS to recover from the state of abandon if was reduced to under the former government.

A management audit had been carried out, structures were being changed and recruitment was being made to cater for current needs.

The ministry's aim was to see the ITS as a centre of excellence for the training of new and serving staff in the tourism industry, thus improving the quality and competitiveness of the Maltese tourism product.
