The government said today it was sourcing EU funds for the building of a breakwater in Marsaxlokk Bay, and the project would be completed in this legislature.

The statement was issued after the National Fisheries Cooperative appealed to the government to consider building a breakwater on the Delimara side of Marsaxlokk Bay to eliminate the risk of accident in bad weather.

The cooperative said that now that the permit for an LNG floating storage at Marsaxlokk had been issued, a breakwater should be considered to at least eliminate the risk of accidents which could come about because of the force of nature.

Replying, the Secretariat for Agriculture and Fisheries said the building of a breakwater was a commitment made before the general election, and it was attempting to source funds for it from the EU. A development application has bee submitted to Mepa and an Environment Impact Assessment is under way.

The project is expected to cost €6m.
