The government has presented a motion for Parliament to debate the agreement reached between Enemalta and Shanghai Electric.

The debate was originally due to have been held late last month but was put off because the Leader of the Opposition was abroad. Yesterday the government proposed holding the debate today, but the opposition protested that a motion had not been presented, and the agreement with Shanghai Electric had not been published.

The motion says that the House notes the strategic investment being made by Shanghai Electric in Enemalta, helping it to address its financial problems after having accumulated a debt of €840 million.

The deal, welcomed by international rating agencies, would also transform Enemalta into a regional player.

The House was therefore urging the government to continue its work along this direction, the motions says.

This evening, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela tabled, on behalf of Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi, the Energy Sector Cooperation agreement between Enemalta Corporation, SEP Malta Holdings Ltd and Shanghai Electric Corporation.
