The government is organising two Medavia flights from Libya tomorrow afternoon and is advising the Maltese still in the country to make use of this ‘assisted departure’.

The flights will be paid by the government.

Addressing a press briefing this afternoon, the principal permanent secretary and head of government contingency centre Mario Cutajar said this was not an evacuation.

He said one of the flights will leave Mitiga Airport near Tripoli, the other Labraq, near Benghazi.

Just over 100 Maltese remain in Libya.

Mr Cutajar said that while Malta's embassy in Tripoli was to remain open, it would not be providing consular services.

Asked about comments made by oil worker Saviour Brincat who arrived in Malta on Monday – and said government ignored his requests to leave the desert for three weeks - Mr Cutajar said government has been in contact with him through some 13 e-mails and phones.
