Updated Saturday 7.35am - The police said this morning that they had called off a search for a car which was reportedly carried out to sea by the waves near Valletta breakwater after establishing that this was not the case.

Yesterday, the police said they were informed by two people who were near the St Elmo Breakwater in Valletta at 12.45pm they had seen a grey car with two people in it being driven towards the breakwater. The car then disappeared and they feared it had been washed away by the rough sea.

Units from the police, the AFM and the Civil Protection Department were involved in the search.

But last night, the police said, a man called at Valletta police station to report that he was in a grey car with another person near the breakwater, but they drove off safely when they saw that the sea was rough.

Further investigations confirmed that no car had fallen into the sea, the police said.
