The Birzebbuga council is objecting to the granting of an environmental permit by the planning authority to the Freeport yesterday for the repair and maintenance of oil rigs.

In a statement this morning, the council said it strongly objected to the permit as the decision would transform the freeport into a shipyard.

It said that unless this permit was revoked it would be considering what other steps it may take in the interest of residents.

Concern was also expressed by the Nationalist Party's College of Local Councillors.

The council noted that yesterday's permit followed Mepa's permit for the LNG tanker in Marsaxlokk Bay.
