Stonemason Joseph Muscat, of Fontana, was arrested yesterday evening after the police seized a 20-foot container containing illegally manufactured fireworks from Triq Santa Dminka, Victoria.
The container was in a field in the vicinity of a convent.
Sources said Mr Muscat used the container as a workshop as well as a store both for his stone and fireworks.
Besides the finished product, there was also sulphur and gunpowder stored next to each other as well as other flammable material.
Police investigations are continuing. A magisterial inquiry is being held.
Illegally stored fireworks in 2008 caused a fireworks explosion in the heart of a densely populated area of Naxxar and killed a housewife, and a fireworks enthusiast. The explosion took place in Ħal Dgħejf Street.
The blast also demolished four houses and damaged several more, throwing the lives of many people in turmoil.
