Updated - Adds video - The roundabout in front of the Auberge de Castille will be removed in the coming months as work gets underway for a revamp of Castille Place under a new design.

The new design was unveiled this morning, at a news conference addressed by Principal Permanent Secretary Mario Cutajar and Grand Harbour Regeneration Committee chairman Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.

Works on this €1.6 million project are expected to be completed by October, in time for the CHOGM summit set for November.

Mr Cutajar spoke about plans to relocate all monuments dedicated to past prime ministers in this square. However, no decision have been taken yet.

The monument of Manuel Dimech, currently in the middle of the roundabout, will be retained in the square.

Mr Cutajar said the aim of the revamp is to give more visibility to the Auberge de Castille and recreate the open space which was lost in 1976, when the present roundabout was constructed. The area will be pedestrianised but traffic access to  St Paul Street and the Central Bank will be retained.
