An unusual artwork was welcomed at Malta Freeport Terminals on the CMA CGM Magellan.

This work of art, by world-renowned artist JR, currently features a pair of mesmerizing eyes all along its starboard side.

A collage of 151 containers created the pixels which formed this image. With a total of 2,600 moves the Operations Department had a painstaking task ahead of them when loading and unloading the containers, constantly vigilant that operations would in no way affect the overall design of the artwork.

The initiative concludes JR's project, “Women are Heroes” initiated in 2008, when he photographed the eyes of extraordinary women all around the world.

The picture that was assembled on the ship are the eyes of Elizabeth, a Kenyan woman living in the Kibera slums, in Nairobi. She is one of the key persons of her community.

The artist and his team spent 10 days pasting 2,600 strips of paper on the containers with the dockers of the port. The vessel left Le Havre on July 4 taking Elizabeth’s eyes on the Mediterranean Sea. From the Malta Freeport, it will proceed through the Suez Canal and on to Asia.

The Magellan, built in 2010, is 366m long, has a beam of 51.2m, a draught of 15.5m, can reach a maximum speed of 24.6km and has a carrying capacity of 13,800 TEUs. This vessel calls at Malta Freeport on a regular basis as part of the FAL1 Service linking Europe to various ports in Asia.
