Egyptian book of the dead guides - containing spells to help people navigate their way through the afterlife - will be showcased in a major exhibition at the British Museum this autumn.

The BP Special Exhibition will explore ancient beliefs about the journey after death.

The museum will display its "unparalleled" Book of the Dead papyri, used for more than 1,500 years. The collection, used between 1600 BC and 100 AD, is a compilation of spells rather than a single text, believed to equip the dead with knowledge and power to guide them safely through dangers and ensure eternal life.

The museum said it had one of the most comprehensive collections of Book of the Dead manuscripts on papyrus in the world, and the exhibition would be the first chance to see many works displayed together.

The exhibition will include the longest Book of the Dead in the world, the Greenfield Papyrus, which measures 37 metres in length and has never been shown publicly in its entirety before.

Also among the treasures will be an array of painted coffins, gilded masks, amulets, jewellery and tomb figurines.

The display will include masterpieces from international collections.

The Egyptians used illustrations to show the Netherworld and the gods and demons whom the deceased would meet, as well as the "weighing of the heart".

The ritual would determine whether the soul was admitted into the afterlife or condemned to destruction at the hands of the Devourer.

The museum unveiled objects that would go into the display, including a painted wooden statuette of the god Osiris, ruler of the Netherworld and judge of the dead.

The figure is hollow and contained the rolled up Book of the Dead papyrus of a high-ranking woman named Anhai dating from around 1150 BC A scene of "the weighing of the heart" on papyrus from the Book of the Dead of Anhai that was stored in the statuette is also being exhibited.

Both items are from the British Museum's collection.

Journey Through The Afterlife: Ancient Egyptian Book Of The Dead runs from November 4 to March 6 next year.
