The Ghaqda Trade Unions Maltin has requested a meeting with the Malta Resources Authority to discuss the increase in power tariffs requested by Enemalta.

The request was made in a letter by MUT president John Bencini, who is chairman of the trade union group.

He said the trade unions wanted to know if the regulator would examine whether there were inefficiencies or bad practices at Enemalta; whether the new tariffs would be locked for a year and whether they would be based on hedging. They wanted to know if prices for consumers would be based only on the oil price and whether Enemalta's outlay of €60m on new Smart meters would be included in the new tariffs.

Mr Bencini said the unions would also like to know whether a social impact assessment had been made ahead of the new tariffs, and whether the one time payment to ease the tariffs, announced in the Budget, had been discussed with the MRA.
