Trade unions have held a preliminary meeting to discuss their future relations.

Representatives of the Confederation of Malta Trade Unions, the General Workers’ Union and Forum, which incorporates a number of unions, met earlier this week under the chairmanship of industrial relations expert Edward Zammit.

Tensions between the three confederations have been running high in recent times, with the three at loggerheads on a variety of issues. Relations thawed somewhat last April, when the CMTU dropped its objection to Forum joining the European Trade Union Confederation.

That agreement had been brokered by Prof. Zammit who was subsequently asked by John Monks, former secretary general of the ETUC, to facilitate further discussions between the three unions.

Prof. Zammit described the preliminary meeting as “a positive one which augurs well for the future”.

The three unions agreed to hold regular meetings and explore ways in which they could collaborate further.
