The Malta Dockers Union has written to the Prime Minister and the Opposition leader requesting a meeting to discuss the Malta Freeport.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat on Monday told a conference that he favoured creating a series of free trade warehouses rather than extend the Freeport further inland.

In a statement, the union said the Freeport was a main source of income for hundreds of port workers who it represented.

It said that during these meetings, it would insist that the Freeport should continue to expand and develop commercial activity according to the exigencies of the sector in full respect to residents and the country’s environmental aims and objectives.
