The medical profession is still waiting for an apology from the MLP spokesman on health Michael Farrugia following his unjustified criticism of the first medical procedures at Mater Dei. Dr Farrugia saw fit to opine that safety procedures, during the historical four angiograms carried out last Monday at Mater Dei, were not adhered to.

It is well known that Prof. Albert Fenech holds an impeccable record with regards to his surgical expertise. Safety is definitely his first priority when undertaking any surgical intervention. This is especially true in the light of the fact that the said surgical interventions were viewed and analysed with great interest by the whole Maltese population. As a doctor, the health spokesman understands the great damage that can be done by any claim that hints at a lack of patient safety and care. This sort of criticism only serves to foster fear and discontent with a service that is working so hard to get going on the right foot.

It is the duty of the opposition spokesman, first and foremost as a member of the medical profession himself, to work hand in hand with all the stakeholders within the health sector to ensure that the migration and initiation of services at Mater Dei run as smoothly as possible.

Dr Farrugia and his party should be ashamed of themselves.
