A total of 5,861 persons were registered as unemployed in June, down by 476 when compared to the same month last year, the NSO said.

In the 12 months to June 2008, unemployment declined in Malta by 503 while it rose by 27 in Gozo.

All the age groups showed a decline in the number of registered unemployed in Malta, except those aged over 45. Between June 2007 and June 2008, the persons who had been on the unemployment register for a year and over dropped by 414.

Among men, occupations related to elementary duties and plant and machine operations were the most common, whereas women tended to seek jobs which were clerical or service oriented.
