An egg and spoon race is never easy on hard terrain but imagine attempting such a feat underwater.

The idea of holding an “underwater Olympics” was conjured up by Melita Brown, Corsair Diving Malta co-owner, to fund-raise for Project Aware, which promotes and conserves underwater environments.

The event took place over the weekend at the Sirens water polo club in St Paul’s Bay, where three participants battled it out in an egg and spoon race, javelin-throwing and putting a golf ball into a hole.

After the aquatic action was over, competing divers and others engaged in a clean-up operation, removing bottles, iron railings, sheet metal and even some road signs from the seabed.

The clean-up effort was also extended to land around the water polo pitch.
