The frequency of having five or more drinks in a row with the specific intention of getting drunk, often referred to as "binge drinking", provides an alternative measure to heavy alcohol use in society.

Social indicators in Malta are showing a consistent pattern of drinking that young adolescents are adopting as a way of enjoyment and as a means of having fun.

The NCW supports Family and Social Solidarity Minister Dolores Cristina, who in a conference held recently on the subject emphasised the need to tackle this phenomenon primarily through education and prevention.

The overall message brought out was that while changes to current legislation would be beneficial, such as the need to establish a minimum consumption age - since sale of alcohol to minors is rampant - the importance of education and the role of parents and all other social actors and community leaders should not be undermined.

It is imperative that they all work together towards the same goal to ensure results against this current form of exploitation.
