A passenger was apprehended at the airport after he was found to be carrying €18,000 in cash which had not been declared.

The man, who was heading for Istanbul, was caught during routine operations at the MIA Departures lounge, by Customs officials from the Enforcement Unit.

His other luggage was off loaded from the aircraft and revealed more cash in different currencies.

The total amounted to €18,366, of which €10,000 were returned to the passenger and the rest seized.

The Police Anti-Money Laundering Section was informed and placed the passenger under arrest. The passenger will be arraigned in court later on Friday.

The Customs Department has stepped up enforcement and this find is one of a series over the past months.
