I would like to air my discontent at the way things are handled in Malta. During the day you can see wardens all over the islands, then at night they vanish. Some drivers of specially designed noisy cars and motorcycles seem to love driving at night and annoying people. They pass several times waking up everyone with the unbearable noise.

Then we have the open-air discos and the car stereos. As another correspondent wrote last week, it is a nightmare trying to sleep.

We at Rabat are in the noise path. At times it is so loud that you can hear the DJ speak. The bass is like a drum and it goes straight to your head. The more you put your ear to the pillow the worse it is.

I cannot remember how many letters to the Police Commissioner I have written and how many calls to the local police I have made, and how many complaints to the local council I have submitted and letters to MPs and Mepa. But so far nothing has been done to suppress such noise.

One shouldn't have to bear this as one's health suffers. Your stomach hurts and your heart beat increases, then your pulse starts racing and you are in danger of getting a heart attack.

This is pure selfishness of a few who are disturbing everyone around them. I thank the Lord when the north wind is blowing because that reduces the noise but it is most unfair to rely on the wind for one to be able to sleep.

We should insist that our peace be returned to us.
