The UN Security Council yesterday unanimously condemned North Korea for its long-range rocket launch and agreed to tighten existing sanctions against the Stalinist state.

The 15 members adopted a compromise statement agreed by six major powers on Saturday in response to the April 5 launch of a three-stage Taepodong-2 rocket over Japan.

The text said the launch violated a 2006 council resolution barring Pyongyang from conducting any missile-related activities.
