A 41-year-old Ukrainian man was this morning charged with trying to seriously injure a police sergeant when he allegedly kicked him in the head while in a police car on the way to the Qawra police station on Sunday evening.

Valerii Lysenko, who lives in St Paul's Bay, pleaded not guilty to trying to seriously injure PS Ivan Mifsud, slightly injuring him and assaulting him at about 7.30pm.

The police reported yesterday that the incident happened when the police were called about a disturbance at a kiosk. When they arrived there they saw that Mr Lysenko was aggressive. He resisted the police but was eventually  handcuffed and put in the back seat of the police car.

On the way to the Qawra police station he kicked Mr Mifsud, who was sitting in the front passenger's seat. Mr Mifsud suffered concussion but had been discharged from hospital.

Mr Lysenko was remanded in police custody.
Police Inspector Godwin Scerri prosecuted.
