England have had the upper hand in four previous meetings with Ukraine although they were beaten in their last encounter in Dnipro nearly three years ago.

May 31, 2000 - England 2 Ukraine 0 (at Wembley)

England handed a debut to current skipper Steven Gerrard - plus Gareth Barry - in the first encounter with Ukraine after they broke away from the Soviet Union.

Goals from Robbie Fowler and Tony Adams ensured a comfortable win for England in the final warm-up match before they headed to the Euro 2000 finals in Belgium and Holland.

Immediately after the game, the then head coach Kevin Keegan announced his squad for the finals with Barry, then operating as a defender for Aston Villa, preferred to Rio Ferdinand.

August 18, 2004 - England 3 Ukraine 0 (at St James’ Park)

With Wembley being rebuilt, England staged the second friendly international against the Ukrainians in Newcastle and cruised to an easy victory.

It was just the tonic England had been looking for in their first match after suffering the heartbreak of losing the Euro 2004 quarter-final to Portugal on penalties.

Shaun Wright-Phillips scored on his England debut with David Beckham and Michael Owen also on target.

April 1, 2009 - England 2 Ukraine 1 (at Wembley)

The first competitive meeting between the countries - a 2010 World Cup qualifier - saw England edge to victory thanks to a late goal from John Terry.

Peter Crouch had volleyed England ahead in the first half but former Chelsea player Andriy Shevchenko stunned the home side with an 75th minute equaliser. But Terry got the better of his former Blues team-mate when he converted a knockdown from Gerrard with just four minutes remaining.

October 10, 2009 - Ukraine 1 England 0 (in Dnipro)

England had already ensured their place at the 2010 World Cup after eight successive wins but suffered their first competitive defeat under Fabio Capello in a hostile atmosphere.

Flares had already fallen dangerously close to Robert Green before he was sent off for fouling Artem Milevskiy - the first England keeper to be dismissed.

Shevchenko’s penalty beat replacement David James but struck a post and a deflected first half shot from Sergiy Nazarenko ensured Ukraine qualified for the play-offs in the first England match to screened exclusively on the internet.
