The UHM has restarted industrial action by ambulance drivers in view of a dispute over the management of the Ambulance Garage.

The union said that agreement had been reached with the Social Policy Ministry on the replacement of the freman in charge of the garage. However, while a new person was sent to run the garage for a number of weeks, the former foreman had now returned.

The UHM said that since the ministry was not honouring its agreement, it had instructed ambulance drivers not to go out on calls unless accompanied by a nurse. Drivers are only to perform duties related to driving.

A spokesman explained that nurses did not usually go out with ambulances on non-urgent calls. Furthermore, ambulance drivers performed several other duties including helping patients and helping to carry the stretcher.

The industrial action will not hit urgent cases.
