Policemen this morning rescued two elderly people as a fire engulfed their home in St Paul's Bay. One of them, a 66-year-old man, suffered serious injuries, which are, however, not life threatening.

The police said the fire, at Triq ir-Rebbiegha, was reported at 3.45 a.m. Policemen and fire-fighters from the Civil Protection Department rushed to the scene.

Policemen made their way in to rescue a 66-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman who were then taken to hospital, along with two of their rescuers.

The police said the man had suffered serious injuries, while the woman and two constables suffered some inhalation.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale is holding an inquiry.
