The death toll from the grounding of the Costa Concordia rose to six last night  after two elderly men were found in the submerged part of the ship. Another body was reported to have been found last night. Three bodies were found soon after the incident on Friday night.

The huge ship is lying on its side in shallow waters off the Italian island of Giglio.

Early on Sunday rescuers rescued two Korean honeymooners who were trapped in their cabin, and a crewman who was trapped in a lower deck and had suffered a broken leg.

Some 15 people remain unaccounted for out of 4,000 passengers and crew. The dead bodies of two passengers and a crewman were found yesterday.

Meanwhile, the captain, Francesco Schettino, who has been criticised for leaving the ship well before the last passengers were evacuated, today defended his actions and said his ship hit rocks which were not marked on nautical charts.
