Last week I had the pleasure of taking a harbour cruise around the Valletta and Three Cities bastions. It was a marvellous experience to see such colossal works of art built so many years ago.

The Prime Minister recently had a similar experience and like him we admired the restoration works that are being carried out on the bastions with such satisfying results.

Yet we could not help noticing two ‘sacrileges’ that have been committed by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, which have ruined such a magnificent view of our bastions. These are the permits issued for the building of the Grand Hotel Excelsior and the block of apartments near the Casinò di Venezia before one gets to Fort St Angelo.

The latter is utterly horrendous when viewed from Kalkara Creek. It is incomprehensible how such a permit was issued. The board that allowed this ought to be prosecuted and ordered to finance the cost of the demolition of this atrocity and the complete rehabilitation of the lost bastions.

How could people be so insensitive when accommodating the developer in question?
