Two men were slightly injured early yesterday morning when the door of a flat in a block of apartments in Naxxar was set alight.

The police said they were informed of the fire in Triq il-Ħamrija at 4.40 a.m. All apartments in the Housing Authority building were evacuated as smoke engulfed the common area. The fire was controlled by the Civil Protection Department.

A 69-year-old man and his 41-year-old son, who reside in the flat, were taken to Mater Dei Hospital suffering from slight injuries.

Nothing was damaged apart from the door, according to police sources, though arson is suspected.

Just minutes later, the police were informed of another fire close to the Marsa racecourse entrance in which a car without registration plates was destroyed. The fire was extinguished by the CPD.

Police are investigating both incidents.
