Two men died while five more were injured - two of whom are in danger of dying - in separate road accidents, last night. In the first mishap, a red Mercedes crashed into a tree as it went past Portes Des Bombes towards Floriana at about 9.30 p.m.

The man who lost his life on impact in the Mercedes was in the front passenger seat while four other male passengers, three of whom are in their early 20s, were on the back seat. The driver who is 19 years old also sustained injuries the nature of which was not yet known at the time of going to print.

Civil Protection Department personnel who were on site had to cut the body of the Mercedes apart in order to ease out the injured persons.

Three ambulances conveyed the victims to Mater Dei Hospital.

In another accident along the Qrendi bypass at about 10.15 also last night a man who was driving a Peugeot 306 lost his life when he crashed into a bus. In the head-on crash, the Peugeot ended up on the side of the bus driver who was suffering from shock. There was no one else in the car which is a write-off.
