Two men were placed on probation yesterday after admitting to the theft of three outboard motors from boats berthed in Birżebbuġa.

Willton Gatt, 19, and Aidon Degiorgio, 20, both from Żabbar, pleaded guilty to stealing the marine motors on Monday night.

Magistrate Carol Peralta heard how the stolen motors had been returned to their owners. He placed Mr Degiorgio on three years’ probation and ordered his parents to report their son if he slips up again. He told him he did not need friends like Mr Gatt.

Turning to Mr Gatt, the magistrate told him that he already had convictions over thefts before, and warned him he was giving him a very last chance.

“You’re on the wrong path. I am giving you a chance. It is now up to you whether to take it or not. This is your opportunity to reform,” he told the youth.

Police Inspector Robert Said Sarreo prosecuted. Lawyers Franco Debono, Marion Camilleri and Angie Muscat appeared for Mr Degiorgio while lawyer Matthew Bondin appeared for Mr Gatt.
