Two men who admitted to having carried drugs to Malta in 2012 were jailed to 10 years and nine years respectively today. They filed guilty pleas in separate cases instead of undergoing trial.

Jose' Benito, a Spaniard, was jailed for 10 years and also fined €23,000 for importing a kilo of cocaine and some cannabis.

The drug was found in two suitcases at a hotel after the police intercepted a Nigerian man who carried a mobile phone with instructions for a drugs pick-up.

The drug had a street value of €63,800.

Separately, Edward Story, a Pole, was jailed for nine years and fined €23,000 for importing 860 grams of heroin.

He travelled to Malta from Rotterdam via Dusseldorf with the drug hidden in capsules in his stomach.

The court heard that the drug had a value of €63,000.
