The police have confirmed that no police weapons were involved in a shooting incident in Rabat this afternoon which involved a policeman and his wife.

Both the long-serving policeman, 47 and his wife, 45, were injured in the incident in the early afternoon, close to the Point to de Vue restaurant. The woman is in a critical condition and the man is suffering from slight injuries.

The shooting followed a heated argument. Some three shots were fired as the woman ran towards the restaurant.

Both the woman and the man suffered bullet wounds but it has not yet been established how the man got shot although the involvement of third parties has been excluded. He may have shot himself.

The police are speaking to a number of witnesses.

The consequences of the incident could have been far worse since there was a petrol station in the the line of fire.
