TARXIEN RAINBOWS 2

Wemmer 28’, 68’

PIETÀ HOTSPURS 0

Despite having to play for eighty two minutes in ten men, Tarxien Rainbows moved a step closer to securing their Premier League status as they defeated Pietà Hotspurs 2-0.

The Rainbows therefore steer away from the play-off spot as they now lie eight points clear of St. Andrews, who are currently third from bottom. The Saints, however, have a game in hand.

The Hotspurs now seem destined to playing in Division One next season as they stay bottom of the table together with Qormi, five points behind St. Andrews.

The game started on the wrong foot for the Rainbows. Matthew Tabone was sent off after just eight minutes for a foul on Scicluna which referee Philip Farrugia considered as denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

However, on 28 minutes, Tarxien forged ahead. Jens Wemmer’s powerful drive from outside the area gave Nicky Vella no chance, ending in the bottom right corner.

In the second half, Pietà Hotspurs went out in search of the equaliser. After being forced to replace the injured James Scicluna with Nicholas Pisani on the half-hour, in the beginning of the second half, Ramon Zammit substituted Neil Pace Cocks with Jake Ghio.

But on the hour, Tarxien could have doubled the score when off a swift counter-attack led by Siraj Arab Eddin, he advanced upfield and into the area, serving Alex Nilsson who, however, failed to connect with the empty goal at his mercy. Six minutes later, Wemmer concluded a good move with a low shot from the right which was parried by Nicky Vella.

The Rainbows sealed the issue with a second goal on 68 minutes. Jacson de Paixao’s corner from the left was well-met by Jens Wemmer who headed the ball home in style.

Two minutes from time, the Hotspurs could have scored a consolation goal but Dylan Agius’ powerful drive was turned into a corner by the Tarxien custodian.

In added time, Nicky Vella came to the rescue for Pietà, blocking with his feet a Michele Paolucci effort from the right.

Jens Wemmer of Tarxien Rainbows was named BOV Player of the Match.
