Two Turkish students were handed a suspended sentence after admitting in court this morning to causing a Spanish national grievous bodily harm in a punch-up over two Colombian young women.

The court heard how Enes Cetin, 24, and Serhat Bilginet, 24, who are English language students, were hanging out with their Columbia dates in Paceville last night.

It appears that the young women received unwanted attention from three Spanish nationals, who are also English language students at the same school which the accused attend.

Lawyer Daniel Buttigieg described the incident as a small argument which rapidly escalated when the Spanish students pushed his clients.

Prosecuting officer Nikolai Sant told Magistrate Gabriella Vella that one of the Spanish nationals had filed a police report, stating that he had been assaulted and presenting a medical certificate which classed his injury as being grievous.

The victim, the court heard, suffered a cut beneath his eyebrow. Facial injuries are generally classified as being grievous in nature.

The court sentenced the two men to one year imprisonment suspended for one year.
