An American and a Romanian who live in Attard were today charged with importing and trafficking drugs and were remanded in custody.

They were arrested when a package containing mephedrone and addressed to their apartment was found by Customs Officials last Friday.

The package had arrived by air from Prague.

The police later found what they suspected to be ecstasy and cocaine at the apartment.

Rodney Andrew Molt, 24, of Huntsville, Alabama, and Ana-Maria Beatrice Ciocanel, 22, of Bucharest, were accused of associating themselves with people in Malta or abroad to sell and traffic mephedrone in Malta.

They were charged with importing or offering to import the drug without the required authorisation.

Mr Molt and Ms Ciocanel were accused of trafficking, selling and distributing the drug and of having it without authorisation.

Mr Molt was also charged with being in possession of ecstasy and cocaine.

The case continues.
