Two Britons, both 35, died this afternoon after they found themselves in difficulty while swimming at the Blue Lagoon in Comino because of strong currents.

The police said they were informed of the incident at 3.30pm.

One was airlifted to Gozo General Hospital by an AFM helicopter, the other was taken by a boat that was in the area to Mgarr Harbour.

A friend who was with them, also British, is currently being held for observation at the Gozo General Hospital suffering from shock, police sources said.

A person who was in the area said people heard the victims crying out for help and a man who was swimming tried to rescue them.

The person noted that there were no lifeguards in the area to offer assistance should the need arise.

An inquiry is being held.
