The two members of the Broadcasting Authority unofficially nominated by the Labour Party have stepped down, the Times of Malta is informed.

Both Reno Borg and Rose Sciberras tendered their resignation from the constitutionally-appointed body for different reasons.

Sources close to the Labour Party said Dr Borg, a lawyer by profession, resigned after he was appointed arbiter for financial services by the Finance Minister.

Ms Sciberras, married to former Labour MP, Judge Phillip Sciberras, said: “Let me make it clear that I stepped down for purely health reasons.” She has served on the broadcasting watchdog uninterruptedly since 1999

Both Dr Borg and Ms Sciberras were appointed for another three-year term only at the beginning of the year, when Peter Fenech and Chris Scicluna were proposed as members by the leader of the Opposition. Tanya Borg Cardona was nominated as chairwoman.

According to the Constitution, the members of the Broadcasting Authority are appointed by the President, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister after consultation with the leader of the Opposition.

It is normal practice that both the government and the Opposition pick two members each, the chairman being nominated by the government.

Two new members have still to be appointed.
