Two persons were found dumping building debris near Dwejra, Gozo on May 6, the Home Affairs Minister said in Parliament this evening.

The dumping of material on the ridge overlooking scenic Dwejra was highlighted by The Sunday Times on May 9. The newspaper carried pictures showing construction waste scattered all over the site, known as Ta' Maxwell, limits of San Lawrenz.. Mepa and the Mayor of San Lawrenz had not been aware of the dumping.

One of the photos, which was passed on to the police, featured a lone construction truck stuck in the area after appearing to sustain a puncture on the rugged land. Police sources later said a man was interviewed on the strength of the picture. Officially, the police would only confirm that "a person was helping in investigations".

Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici, replying to a parliamentary question by Leo Brincat (PL) said the police carried out frequent patrols, including the area around Dwejra, to prevent dumping.

19 persons were caught dumping in the past two years including two in Dwejra on May 6.

The Ministry of Gozo regularly informed the police about such illegalities, the minister added.
