A man has been arrested after injuring five people with an axe at Dusseldorf main train station in Germany, police said.

The man arrested was also injured, spokeswoman for Dusseldorf police Anja Kynast said.

She was unable to say how serious any of the injuries were.

Earlier, a spokesman for federal police, usually in charge of policing train stations, said two people were arrested and further attackers might be on the run.

Ms Kynast said officers are searching the station and its surroundings but do not have concrete information about further attackers at this stage.
