A quarry in Attard's Wied Incita should be converted into an ecological park, Żminijietna – Voice of the Left has said.

In a statement, the leftist advocacy group expressed concern about plans to transform the area into an industrial park, saying the area's "surrounding habitat is primarily a rocky area, garigue rich in soil and vegetation, surrounded by agricultural fields”.

It called on the Planning Authority and Environment Minister to safeguard the area from any further development.

The valley, which serves as a buffer between Attard and Żebbuġ, has been the subject of various proposals over the past decade.

Residents had long complained about quarrying in the area, and in 2006, a proposal by the Environmental Landscapes Consortium to turn the valley into an agri-tourism venture was tentatively approved. The project never happened, and in 2011 developers had applied to turn the valley into an 18-hole golf course. That project also failed to get off the ground.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party expressed its full support for Żminijietna's proposal.

"By restoring and returning Wied Incita back to the people this government would be mitigating the environmental damage inflicted both by the previous administration and by the current administration's poor environmental policies."
