Users of travel and hospitality review website TripAdvisor have ranked Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands to be the best island in the world.

The latest chart released by the website listed the top 10 around the globe and also included the favourite picks in different areas.

Malta failed to make it into either the worldwide or Europe-only list, losing out to some of its Mediterranean neighbours.

According to the website, which collates reviews to create its charts, after Providenciales, the second-best island in the world was Maui, in Hawaii, followed by Roatan, one of the Bay Islands.

Santorini in the Cyclades – which topped the Europe-only list – came fourth in the world rankings, with Ko Tao in Surat Thani Province in fifth and Madeira sixth.

In Europe, Santorini was followed by Madeira and Crete

Seventh place was taken by Bali, Indonesia, with Mauritius off the African coast coming eighth.

Bora Bora – one of the Society Islands – came next and the top 10 was rounded out with Fernando de Noronha in Brazil.

In the Europe-only rankings, Santorini was followed by Madeira again and the Greek island of Crete, with Ionian Zakynthos in fourth place.

Fuerteventura was one of two Canary Islands represented in the list, coming fifth, while Jersey in the English Channel came sixth. Popular Balaeric island Majorca came next in seventh place, then the Italian island Capri off the coast of Naples.

Ninth place was taken by another Canary island, this time Tenerife, and Corsica was named as the 10th best European island.
