A video showing a large retired ferry dramatically grinding onto land has gone viral.

The clip, which has had over half a million views on YouTube, shows the 'Ostend Spirit' heading to the shore at speed, before scraping to a standstill between two boats.

It was retired by its owners, coming to rest for the last time at the ship-breaking yard in Aliaga, Turkey, where it was later taken apart.

The video, filmed in November 2013, has only now got world-wide attention.

The ship, formerly known as 'The Pride of Calais', served as a channel ferry for P&O Ferries, travelling between Dover and Calais for 22 years until 2012.

It was then renamed 'Ostend Spirit' and served another two years for Transeuropa Ferries, journeying between Ramsgate in England and Ostend in Belgium.
