A Tunisian bus driver was granted bail today after pleading not guilty to threatening his wife during an argument.

The man, who cannot be mentioned by court order to protect the identity of the alleged victim, denied threatening his wife, causing her to fear that violence will be used against her, harassing her, and to breaching the peace in a commotion at the Birzebbuga police station.

The man, who works as a bus driver for Malta Public Transport, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Defence lawyers Jason Azzopardi and Kris Busietta told Magistrate Audrey Demicoli that the couple have been married for seven years and had had a disagreement early on Sunday.

The magistrate granted him bail against a €350 deposit and a €1,500 personal guarantee after the accused said his friend had offered to let him live with him in Mellieha until the case is heard.

She also issued a protection order covering the wife and her young son.

Police Inspector Chantelle Casha prosecuted.
