A 27-year-old Tunisian who lives in Birkirkara was this morning jailed for a year after pleading guilty to assaulting and violently resisting five police officers and damaging a police car.

Abdel Raouf Hassan Ali Mohammed also admitted to breaching the peace and conditions of a previous release.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera heard that the incident followed an argument between Mr Mohammed and another man at Diana Kiosk at the Valletta terminus.

Both men were arrested and taken to the Valletta police station. The accused ran into a wall three times, a doctor was called and he was taken to Mater Dei Hospital and given a tranquilliser.

Mr Mohammed was then taken back to the police headquarters, where he broke a tap and flooded his cell.
