A young truck driver who was seriously injured in a collision with an oncoming trailer three days ago is recovering and is no longer in intensive care.

Johann Charles Xerri, 27, was driving an empty truck along Is-Sejba Street, Mqabba, when he crashed into an unloaded trailer driven by Alan Depasquale, 34.

Mr Depasquale was found standing outside his trailer but Mr Xerri got trapped inside the truck cabin because his leg was caught in the mangled metal.

He spent more than half an hour in the wreckage as firemen tore through the twisted steel and paramedics treated him as best they could.

Sources said he was yesterday transferred to an orthopaedic ward from intensive care and was receiving treatment for fractures.

Mr Depasquale was also hospitalised but found to be only slightly injured.

Police Inspector Carlos Cordina is heading investigations into the crash. Magistrate Giovanni Vella has launched an inquiry.
