Emanuel Balzan, better known as Tristan B, this afternoon delighted guests, including President George Abela and Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia, with his songs during the inauguration of a Music Hall at the Corradino Correctional Facility.

Mr Balzan, who is in prison for fraud, said that this new room was only possible through the funds of the Community Chest Fund and will help inmates prepare themselves better for when they walked out of prison.

Dr Mallia said he was dedicating a lot of attention to the prison and pledged that a music teacher would soon start attending the prison.

He said that the Government was also planning to issue a call to find a new Prisons director after an internal call produced no results.

The new director will succeed Emanuel Camilleri who tendered his resignation a few weeks after being appointed to the post by Dr Mallia.

Asked whether the departure of Mr Camilleri was tied to alleged interference by the Minister and his staff, Dr Mallia refuted this allegation and called his chief of staff Silvio Scerri as “a very capable person”.

“I am very happy with Mr Scerri as he does his job very well,” he said.

Dr Mallia said Mr Camilleri decided to step down out of his own free will and underlined that he was still acting director.
