A 25-year-old man was yesterday jailed for a year after he tried to leave for London on Monday using his brother’s ID card.

Jeremy Farrugia of Birkirkara told the court through his lawyer he was going to seek specialist medical help for a problem in his legs.

However, the prosecution said he was being investigated and the evidence at hand suggested he planned to leave for good. He was in possession of a one-way ticket when he was apprehended at the airport.

Police Inspector Keith Arnaud said Mr Farrugia was on police bail and had a pending court case.

Mr Farrugia pleaded guilty to using an ID card that was not his, making a false declaration, breaching bail conditions and relapsing. Magistrate Antonio Mizzi jailed him for a year after taking into consideration the circumstances of the case and that he had admitted to the police in an early stage of the proceedings.

Police Inspector Joseph Mercieca also prosecuted.

Legal aid lawyer Martin Fenech appeared for Mr Farrugia.
