Some 337 evacuees, mainly Indian, arrived on board the ship Red Star yesterday, as Malta continued to act as an evacuation hub for those fleeing the crisis in neighbouring Libya.

The Indians are only a small fraction of thousands of compatriots who are expected to be evacuated through the island in the coming days.

A British national was also aboard the ship, which docked at around 9 a.m., yesterday.

Flights are already underway to send them home.

Officials and two ambulances were at the dock to welcome the arrivals and took those needing medical care to Mater Dei Hospital.

Yesterday’s arrivals bring the number of evacuees passing through Malta close to 15,000.

This is set to double this week with the planned ar-rival of so many more Indian nationals.
