A General Workers' Union shop steward who used to work with a security company has been awarded €16,000 in compensation for unfair dismissal.
The union said in a statement it had moved the case, involving Joseph Zarb, a former security guard with JF Security & Consultancy Services Ltd, to the Industrial Tribunal after the company terminated his job saying his behaviour with clients was unprofessional.
The union said that as a GWU shop steward, Mr Zarb's superiors did not really like him.
The tribunal decided that Mr Zarb was an exemplary worker who took an interest in his work and who worked to ensure that his colleague's rights were safeguarded.
