Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this morning that the success of Trelleborg's research facility in Marsa continued to show how Malta had a future in high-end manufacturing.

Dr Gonzi made his comment as he toured the facility with Finance Minister Tonio Fenech.

The plant recently spearheaded research into rubber seals for cars using bio-fuels, and new seals to be used in wind turbines.

Its biggest market is the automotive industry.

Company officials explained how the Marsa facility imports rubber granules and turns it into raw material of the required quality for the Trelleborg manufacturing factory in Hal Far. The facility also conducts research for other clients.

Trelleborg was recently selected as one of just three companies approved by VW to produce seals for its automotive refrigeration systems.

Trelleborg invested €10 million in Malta in the past two years.

It was set up in Malta more than 50 years ago (as Malta Rubber) but has since transformed itself from a low end producer of rubber rings to a top of the range producer of seals.

Dr Gonzi also pointed out that since 2008 Malta Enterprise approved 130 proposals for the setting up of new factories or extensions, employing over 3,000 jobs.
